Why do I never hear back from job applications?
Because a portal application is filed, not delivered. Nobody at the company is told it arrived, and there is no thread for anyone to reply to. Emailing a real person at the same employer behaves completely differently: across 86 cold emails to UK employers, 22 came back, which is 26%. Cold email normally runs at 1% to 5%. The difference was almost entirely about who received it.
What actually happens to a portal application
It lands in an applicant tracking system as a row. No email is sent to anybody. If the employer is getting 300 of them, somebody opens the list when they have an afternoon free, and most rows are never opened at all. There is no thread, so even a reader who likes your CV has nothing to reply to.
That is not the employer being rude. It is the format.
What happens when the same employer gets an email
An email arrives in an inbox a person is already reading, and replying is one tap. Here is what that was worth across 86 cold emails to UK employers:
| Who was reached | Sent | Replied | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Address printed in the advert | 9 | 6 | 67% |
A hiring inbox (careers@, hr@) | 10 | 5 | 50% |
| A named human | 34 | 13 | 38% |
A generic info@ | 42 | 4 | 10% |
| Everything | 86 | 22 | 26% |
Two honest caveats. The hiring-inbox row is only ten emails, so read 50% as "about as good as a named person", not as better than one. And these are engineering and technician roles in Scotland.
The comparison I cannot give you
There is no clean number here for portal applications, because portals do not tell you. No read receipt, no rejection in most cases, nothing to count. Anybody quoting you a precise reply rate for applying through a portal has made it up. What can be said is that 26% of these emails got an answer, and that cold email normally runs between 1% and 5%.
What to change
- Read the advert to the bottom. If there is an address in it, use that. It replied at 67%.
- No address in the advert: try the company's own site. Small firms put
the whole team on
/contactor/about. - No name going: a hiring inbox beats a generic one by four to one.
- Found nothing real? Send nothing. A guessed address bounces, and a bounce costs you the sender reputation that delivers the next thirty.
- Apply through the portal as well. It costs nothing.
Where these numbers come from
86 cold emails to real UK employers over four weeks, sent by one person looking for work, logged as they went. 22 replies. The full method and every table is in the playbook, free, no account.
They are engineering and technician roles in Scotland, so a different trade may behave differently. Where a row is thin it says so on the row.
Since then: 171 applications across 137 employers, 32 replies, 19%. Live, and updated after every run.
