How many job applications does it take to get a job?
For one person who counted every email: 568 applications sent straight to UK employers between May and October 2026 brought 87 replies from a person, 12 interviews and 3 written job offers. That is about one interview for every 47 applications and one offer for every 189. The rate rose sharply once guessed email addresses were dropped: sent only to addresses employers publish themselves, 61 of 264 emails got a reply, 23%. One person's figures, not a law, but every one is counted from the sent folder.
The whole count
| Sent | Bounced | A person replied | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guessed addresses (May) | 304 | 132 | 26 |
| Only addresses employers publish (August to October) | 264 | 5 | 61 |
| All of it | 568 | 137 | 87 |
From those 87 replies came 12 interviews, rounds and phone invitations included, and 3 job offers, all in writing. "Replied" counts polite noes too, because a no from a person still means the email reached one. Automatic replies and bounces are not counted.
What it means for your own search
- Most emails get no reply, and that is normal. Even the good months were about one in four.
- The address mattered more than anything else. Guessing cost 132 bounces and a damaged inbox. Using only addresses employers print took replies from 9% to 23%.
- It takes weeks, not days. One offer came 17 days after a single short email.
- Volume of good applications wins. 12 interviews needed hundreds of real, specific emails, not a handful of perfect ones.
These are one person's figures, so treat them as a guide, not a promise. The live figures are published, including the bad months.
Doing it at that volume
Finding a real address for every job is the slow part. Type any company's name and it shows the addresses that company publishes, free, with no account. Or let Recruited do the lot: find the jobs, find who is hiring, and write to them from your own email.
Where these numbers come from
Every application email in one UK job hunt, May to October 2026: 568 of them, counted one by one from the sent folder. Addresses were guessed from a pattern in May; from August only addresses employers publish were used. The interviews are the jobseeker's own count, rounds and phone invitations included; the offers are all in writing. One person's figures, so a guide, not a promise.
Since then: 171 applications across 137 employers, 32 replies, 19%. Live, and updated after every run.
