Is it worth emailing a company directly instead of applying?

Yes, and who you reach decides most of it. Across 86 cold emails to UK employers, a named human replied 38% of the time and a hiring inbox such as careers@ or hr@ replied 50%, against 10% for a generic info@. Reaching a person or a hiring inbox rather than a generic one was worth roughly four times the reply rate. Applying through the portal as well costs nothing and is worth doing.

The finding, in one table

Every email below used the same rules, the same structure and the same sign-off. The only thing that varied was who received it.

Who you reachedSentRepliedRate
A hiring inbox (careers@, hr@)10550%
A named human (j.smith@)341338%
A generic inbox (info@, hello@)42410%

Reaching a person or a hiring inbox rather than a generic one was worth roughly four times the reply rate, 41% against 10%. That comparison rests on 44 emails to humans against 42 to generic inboxes, which is a gap far too wide to be noise.

The 50% row is ten emails. Read it as "about as good as a named person", not as better than one.

Does it annoy them?

Out of 86, none of the replies were a complaint about being emailed. The ones that said no said no, which is still more than a portal gives you. What does annoy people is volume and repetition, so the rules that go with this are one email per employer ever, and stop everything the moment anyone replies, including an automated reply.

Do both

Apply through the portal as well. It costs ten minutes and it is where the paperwork ends up anyway. The email is not a replacement for the application, it is the part that makes somebody aware the application exists.

Tuesday to Thursday, 9 to 11am, replied best. Monday is triage and Friday is gone.

Where these numbers come from

86 cold emails to real UK employers over four weeks, sent by one person looking for work, logged as they went. 22 replies. The full method and every table is in the playbook, free, no account.

They are engineering and technician roles in Scotland, so a different trade may behave differently. Where a row is thin it says so on the row.

Since then: 171 applications across 137 employers, 32 replies, 19%. Live, and updated after every run.
