What is the best time to send a job application email?
It matters far less than everyone says. Sending inside office hours returned a reply 19.1% of the time and outside them 17.9%, across 166 applications. A gap of one point on that sample is noise, not an effect. What does matter is the age of the advert: anything over a week old already has a shortlist. If you want a rule, Tuesday to Thursday morning is marginally the best guess, but choosing the right recipient is worth several times more than choosing the right hour.
What was actually measured
| When it went | Sent | Replied | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekday, 9am to 5pm | 110 | 21 | 19.1% |
| Everything else | 56 | 10 | 17.9% |
One point of difference across 166 applications. That is a coin landing slightly off centre, not an effect you can use.
What does matter
- How old the advert is. Anything over a week has a shortlist already. Under 48 hours is the window worth chasing.
- Who receives it. On the same set of emails, moving from a generic inbox to a named person was worth about four times the reply rate. That is the lever. The clock is not.
If you want a rule anyway
Tuesday to Thursday morning, because Monday is triage and Friday is gone. Treat it as a tie-breaker for when you were going to send anyway, not as a reason to sit on a finished letter for two days. A letter that waits until Tuesday is competing against a shortlist that formed on Monday.
All the figures, including the ones that went the wrong way, are on the numbers page.
Where these numbers come from
86 cold emails to real UK employers over four weeks, sent by one person looking for work, logged as they went. 22 replies. The full method and every table is in the playbook, free, no account.
They are engineering and technician roles in Scotland, so a different trade may behave differently. Where a row is thin it says so on the row.
Since then: 171 applications across 137 employers, 32 replies, 19%. Live, and updated after every run.
