Do employers use AI to screen job applications?
Many do, and the more useful point is that it barely matters why your application went unanswered. A portal application is filed rather than delivered: nobody is told it arrived and there is no thread for anyone to reply to, screening software or not. Emailing a real person at the same employer behaves completely differently, because a message in somebody's inbox has to be dealt with by a human being. Across 86 such emails, 22 came back, which is 26%, against the 1% to 5% cold email normally returns.
The honest version
Plenty of employers do screen applications automatically, and plenty of advice exists about beating it — keyword stuffing, plain formatting, matching the job description word for word. Some of that helps a little.
But it aims at the wrong problem. Whether a machine read your application badly or no human read it at all, the outcome is identical and the fix is the same.
A portal application is filed, not delivered
Nobody at the company is notified that it arrived. There is no thread, no inbox, no obligation and nothing for anyone to reply to. It sits in a system until somebody chooses to go and look, which may be never.
An email to a person behaves completely differently. It lands in an inbox belonging to somebody whose job is to deal with what is in it, and not answering is a small active decision rather than the default.
| Sent | Replied | Rate | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold emails to a real person or hiring inbox | 44 | 18 | 41% |
| Cold emails to a generic inbox | 42 | 4 | 10% |
| All 86 cold emails | 86 | 22 | 26% |
Cold email is normally quoted at 1% to 5%. The letters here were nearly identical to each other; the variable that moved was who opened them.
Do both
Apply through the portal as well. It costs five minutes, it is where the formal process lives, and the email is what makes anyone go and look at it.
